First, a buffer image:
Below is a screenshot of my work cell phone from the other day. FULL DISCLOSURE: My name is NOT Andrew and I didn’t sign up for any of that s**t. I am about the least likely person on earth to contribute to that campaign. I’ve gotten 4 more texts since I took that shot, too. I’ve been getting this garbage for about a year now, but it’s really escalated lately.
Serious question - do other candidates sink to the same level of spamming their supporters? Does anyone fall for this crap? This reeks to me of a simple money grab, which really wouldn’t surprise me (well, nothing would surprise me at this point).
I get emails from numerous campaigns (probably from voting in both R and D primaries, I guess), but absolutely nothing like this crap.

Swing state?

Nope - I live in Illinois.

I got a text the other day from a political party, asking if they had my support. As a matter of principle I texted them no, because leave me alone.

Swinger state more like.

I never reply to that stuff, because I don’t want them to know it’s a real number.
But if I did, it would be “Not if you keep texting me”

That is incredibly annoying. I’m glad I only get a few local ones and even then I text stop so I hopefully never hear back

My only hope is that eventually a real person calls. I wonder how long I can keep them on the line for.

Yeah, the funny thing is that my non-work related texts are 90% Chump fundraising requests and 10% penis pills.
Voice mails are 90% bill collectors. Andrew Wendt - yeah I said it - can probably be found on r/incel, I suspect.

I usually delete them, but I’ve just been letting them pile up lately for no particular reason.

I occasionally get the Trump campaign scam in emails, but never before on my phone.
Yes, bill collectors come to my phone number. I was harassed on my office phone for the first few years of my job by collectors looking for a guy who had worked in the college previously and apparently couldn’t pay his bills. The school had recycled his number to my phone.

There’s a lady who has been putting our number down as hers for years. She also doesn’t pay her bills. We finally just turned the ringer off and quit answering the phone. If it’s someone who knows us, they know our cell numbers and just call us there. T he house phone is a dead-end for anyone else. If it weren’t included in the cable package, we’d probably drop the number.

No other political campaigns act like that, or at least didn’t until a few of the (other) grifteriest R’s adopted this type of scammy bullshit. The Bloomberg campaign was pretty persistent before certain primaries, but even then—campaign texts/emails/calls to vote or donate? Sure. Incessant misleading scammy crap with this insanely crude tone? Uh, that’s new and relatively rare still. But it must work on the target audience or they wouldn’t do it. Source: girlfriend and many friends work in politics.

I don’t think I have ever gotten anything like that , though I would have to wonder if they’re le git . I have seen that kind of thing as email spam, and it was every significant candidate at the time . I’ve also seen spam that I’m pretty sure were scams claiming to represent a campaign .
In my area the big thing 4 years ago was Clinton people going door-to-door . Bang on your door, leave a tag on the knob, and then everybody who drives past can see who isn’t home that week. I always did my neighbor (townhouse apartment, door right next to mine) the courtesy of taking it off the doorknob and shov ing it through the mail slot, just like I grab the newspapers if she forgets to stop delivery before going on vacation .

I had 3 calls on Saturday from the same number, 443 area code. I believe that they are from a politcal campaign, although I have not listened to the message. Mrs. Twowheels tells me I should answer the call when they called the 2nd time. I did not, and told her “I don’t want to encourage them”.
No calls since their 3rd attempt on Saturday.

We did drop our number. Only my wife’s mom even tried to use it by the time we canceled it (along with TV because we don’t watch it), and it was easy to redirect her . We still give the old number though for commercial transactions that require a number but will never contact us.

If I see a call using my now defunct area code from an unknown number, I usually ignore it because that means they are using whatever illegal thing that is called that blocks the source.

If I don’t recognize the number, I let it go to message.

I have a google voice number that I hand out sometimes. It forces them to listen to a recording, make a selection, and let me know who they are before it forwards the call. When it rings on my cell phone, I get to hear someone say, “uuuuhhh, this is Monica at the dentist’s office. I’m trying to reach BicycleBuck about an appointment.” Then I press one to accept the call and it forwards it to me. It’s really, really nice for screening unwanted and robocalls.

Wow, that would be VERY annoying. All I got today was a message from Marcy Kaptur, the best Rep in Congress,
on my land line phone, ‘cause I’m an old, and an actual letter from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, signed by Nancy P. herself ;) . I don’t usually donate to campaigns, but this year may be different. My wife and I are both working thru this mess, so we actually have $$ in the bank for the first time in many years. Course, I’ll send a check or maybe a money order, just to keep the spam mail down to a minimum.

Reply STOP and these will stop.

Every time my wife's grandpa sends me pro trump stuff I sign him up for an email or text list of things he would hate like ACLU blm Ben and Jerry's Etc. Maybe someone just wants to ruffle your feathers?

And yeah, that’s more or less what my spam folder looks like.
I made the very terrible mistake of giving to an act blue campaign that gave money to every Democratic House candidate, which got me on a lot of lists...

I only get them from Cheeto boys campaign, so I suspect they are real, but I don't know for sure.

That gets better and better the more you read down. But that font is killing me.
I have never given money to a campaign. I'm on a lot of email lists, for local stuff though. From voter rolls I'm sure.

Tbh I'm enjoying the ever escalating desperation

Lol my brother did that to my uncle.
I don't think so - it's strictly a work phone, and it started not long after I got the number. The pace has really picked up with the coming election.

I get bill collectors on both of my phones. They're never asking for me, luckily.
![]() 08/03/2020 at 23:26 |

I don't EVER answer unfamiliar numbers. They can leave a message. Maybe I'll call them back.

The best one I did was unrelated. I signed my dad up for a free sample of adult diapers when he turned 55. The most amazing part is it shipped to him in a box with pictures of fishing lures on the outside. He was so excited to get fishing stuff and then was crushed he figured it was his buddy and was heated when I owned up.

Ugh, I got a text from some scammy group urging me to reelect the scumbag congressperson who I absolutely can’t stand. I’ve never done anything with this group before and have no clue where they got my number.
I think I reported it as spam to the FCC even though they a note on the Do Not Call page said that they don’t consider political calls as spam per se. It damn well should be from groups I have no connection to, though. I don’t expect anything to come from it given that our government is as scummy as said congressperson, but it felt cathartic anyway.
There really is a special place in hell for the dingdongs who interrupt my day without any invitation to do so.

If it convinces people to give $ to a crappy “university,” buy Trump water and Trump steaks, and have a Trump vodka tonic before slipping into your Trump pajamas and going to sleep on your Trump mattress while your head is gently cradled by a Trump pillow, then it will work to get votes!
Oh, none of those things actually exist now? Well, then, there’s hope for us yet.

I t’s xkcd of course , which is why you get the sloppy hand written font

TBH my phone is completely silenced almost all of the time. And I never, ever answer calls from unrecognized numbers.

Just wait until he leaves office, if he leaves. That crap will be everywhere.

Nice solution. I’ve considered just setting my iPhone to only accept calls from people in my contacts. The thing that stops me is that once in a great while, someone not in the contacts list will need to call me, and that’s usually an important call.

I have the same issue. My cell is my work phone, so I have to answer. My google voice line forwards to my cell.
